Hansel & Gretel:
Witch Hunters (2013)
IMDB genre: Action/Fantasy/Horror
Director: Tommy Wirkola
Writer: Tommy Wirkola
Starring: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Peter Stormare
I want to start this review by
stating my biggest surprise of this movie, and probably the main attraction of
the film for a lot of people; Gemma Arterton! I don’t why but I’ve never warmed
to her before, not enough to put me off a film but she’s never been the main
appeal. However, I then watched this & The Disappearance of Alice Creed
within a day of each other & suddenly I can see her merit as an actress
(although admittedly the tight outfits she wears in this movie may have had
something to do with that revelation!)
Now that’s out of the way, let’s move
onto the film itself. I have to be completely honest; this film is never going
to win any awards. It’s not big, it’s not clever but boy is it fun! It’s one of
those films that embraces what it is and enjoys that. As a result, the script
is full of snappy one-liners and the visual effects are spectacular.
In regards to the plot, it’s pretty
much what you’d expect. I doubt there will be any big surprises but with all
that witch blood spraying around I don’t think you will care! I watched this
film on Netflix in 2D so I didn’t get the full 3D experience of the blood
splattering at your face but I imagine it would definitely have been at full
tacky horror film level and would have definitely added to the fun.
So, in short, I loved this film.
Maybe it was the gore, maybe it was the laughs, maybe it’s because I’m a sucker
for a twist on fairy tales, or maybe it’s all three. This film has a lot going
for it and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Enjoy!
Gore:
This film is very gory but it’s not realistic, we’re talking full comedy horror fun not torture porn.
